Makhmud Makhmudzade was born in Baku, Azerbaijan on June 27, 1964 as the only artist in the family, spending most of his childhood in Algeria. He currently lives in Baku. He studied at the Azerbaijan State Institute of Arts from 1979 to 1983, where he met his lifelong mentor and friend, Rasim Babayev. He came to teach at the University of Finest Arts in Baku as a faculty member of their Graphic department from 1987 to 1991, and became a member of the Baku Art Center (BAC) in 1988.

Makhmud finds most inspiration in aspects of his own physical and mental environment. He loves to spend time around the Caspian Sea, where he frequently finds inspiration for his art. While he paints, he never thinks about style; to him, painting is just a way of living, through which he can share everything he loves.
